As educators, we believe that a strong school community begins with a strong staff community. Before we can create a safe, nurturing environment for children, we must first invest in the relationships, communication, and trust within our own team because we believe that the heart of a thriving school lies in the people who make it come alive.
That is why the weeks before reopening are dedicated not only to planning lessons and organizing resources, but also to investing in our staff through purposeful training sessions and team-building activities. Designed to strengthen relationships and collaboration, these experiences remind us that children flourish when the adults around them work together.
As part of the staff training, one of the most memorable activities was a simple exercise involving balloons. What began as a fun team challenge soon became a powerful reminder of what it truly takes to help every child flourish.
The Balloon Challenge: Keeping Every Balloon in the Air
Each staff member was given a balloon and asked to inflate it. Once everyone had gathered together, the challenge was simple:
Keep every balloon in the air for 60 seconds without letting any touch the ground.
At first, it seemed easy. The staff members laughed, jumped, stretched, and reached for balloons drifting away. But very quickly, something became apparent.
No single person could keep all the balloons afloat at once.
The moment someone focused only on the balloon closest to them, another balloon would begin to fall elsewhere. Success depended on everyone paying attention, moving together, and helping one another.
When the activity ended, we paused to reflect.
The balloons, which we discussed, represented our students.
Every child who enters our school carries unique strengths, challenges, emotions, questions, and dreams. Just as one person could not keep all the balloons in the air alone, no single teacher can meet every need of every child independently.
It takes a community.
The classroom teacher, support staff, administrators, specialists, and even fellow students all play a role in helping children thrive.
The Lesson Behind the Laughter
While the activity was fun and energetic, its message was powerful.
Children flourish when adults work together.
In schools, collaboration is often invisible to parents and students. Much of it happens during planning meetings, conversations in hallways, shared observations, and moments when one teacher steps in to support another.
The balloon challenge reminded us that education is never an individual effort. It is a collective responsibility.
When teachers communicate openly, share ideas, support one another, and remain attentive to the needs around them, children benefit directly.
